The Chappie-Shasta OHV Area spans over 52,000 acres with more than 200 miles of roads and trails, offering extensive riding opportunities for all skill levels near Shasta Dam and Shasta Lake. The terrain features steep climbs, rocky sections, and dozens of creek crossings across elevations ranging from 600 to 4,649 feet, with diverse landscapes from Sacramento River riparian areas to oak woodlands and higher elevation pine forests. Trail variety includes wide jeep roads, ATV trails, and single-track options, providing challenges for beginners through advanced riders. The area offers scenic overlooks of the Sacramento River below Shasta Dam, with opportunities for swimming and fishing in addition to riding.
Access is via Interstate 5 to the Shasta Dam exit, then west on Shasta Dam Boulevard across the dam to the staging area, which features loading ramps, vault toilets, and day-use parking. The area includes a 30-unit U.S. Forest Service campground and is co-managed by the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service. Red sticker vehicles are restricted to seasonal use from October 1 through May 31, while green sticker vehicles can operate year-round. Riders should be aware that some roads and trails cross private land and are subject to closure at landowners' discretion. The area can become very dry and rocky during certain seasons, and the diverse elevation range supports wildlife including osprey, bald eagles, mule deer, and bears.Dirt Bike Trail System
